IEEE Canada brings together engineers, researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to informs evidence-based public policy that supports innovation, protects the public interest, and strengthens Canada’s technology ecosystem.

As the Canadian region of the world’s largest technical professional organization, IEEE Canada provides independent technical expertise—not political advocacy—to help governments make informed decisions on emerging technologies.

Our Mission

IEEE Canada serves as a trusted and knowledgeable source of scientific, engineering, and technology expertise to support evidence-based public policy.

Working with volunteers from across Canada, the Public Policy Committee facilitates the development of technical guidance and provides objective, non-partisan advice on engineering and technology issues affecting Canadians.

What We Do

The Public Policy Committee:

  • Develops IEEE Canada position statements, white papers, reports, and technical briefs on engineering and technology topics.
  • Facilitates dialogue between technical experts, policymakers, academia, industry, and the public on emerging technology issue
  • Provides scientific and technological expertise to Canadian governments and public organizations.
  • Identifies emerging policy issues where IEEE Canada’s technical expertise can contribute.
  • Collaborates with IEEE organizational units worldwide to ensure consistency and maximize impact.
  • Communicates IEEE Canada’s technical perspectives to policymakers

Policy Priorities

IEEE Canada’s policy work reflects the breadth of IEEE’s technical fields of interest and evolves as new technologies emerge. Current areas include: 

  • Digital Society (e.g., AI, cybersecurity, privacy)
  • Infrastructure (e.g., digital sovereignty, telecommunications, quantum technologies)
  •  Sustainable Technologies (e.g., energy, electrification)
  • Industrial Innovation (e.g., manufacturing, robotics)
  • Foundational Technologies (e.g., standards, interoperability).

Government & Stakeholder Engagement

IEEE Canada engages with federal, provincial, and municipal governments, regulators, standards organizations, industry, academia, and other public policy organizations to provide objective technical expertise on engineering and technology issues.

As a non-partisan professional organization, IEEE Canada contributes technical knowledge rather than political advocacy, helping decision-makers understand the opportunities, risks, and societal implications of emerging technologies.

IEEE section engagement

IEEE Canada’s Public Policy Committee welcomes IEEE members from Canadian Sections who are interested in applying their technical expertise to public policy.

Whether your background is in research, industry, government, entrepreneurship, or standards development, there are many ways to contribute.

Members can:

  • Identify emerging public policy issues within their fields of expertise. 
  • Help identify emerging policy topics from local Sections and technical communities.
  • Contribute technical expertise to position statements and white papers. 
  • Review draft publications and provide technical feedback. 
  • Join IEEE Canada PPC in consultations, workshops, and policy forums. 

Participation provides members with an opportunity to translate technical knowledge into real-world impact while strengthening Canada’s innovation ecosystem.

Get involved

IEEE Canada welcomes members interested in contributing to public policy activities. Volunteers with expertise in engineering, science, technology, standards, and innovation can propose and participate in the development of position statements, technical briefs, and other policy initiatives through the Public Policy Committee.
